Lolo National Forest spans 2 million acres and includes four wilderness areas, as well as the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area which offers recreation opportunities including the Lee Creek Interpretive Trail, great for those looking for an educational hike. This luscious forest brims with larch, white-bark pine, a variety of spruce and fir tree species and western red cedar, which grows larger in Lolo National Forest than any other tree species anywhere in Montana, The rich forest is home to plenty of large mammals including the grizzly, black bear, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, elk, moose and mule deer, and both the bald and golden eagle reside in the forest along with trumpeter swan, herons and 30 varieties of ducks.
Visitors to Lolo National Forest looking to get more physical, will enjoy the 9 trails which lead through dense vegetation, narrow canyons, receding glaciers, trout-laden streams and gem-like lakes, and there are camping opportunities ranging from developed campgrounds to isolated backcountry campsites, so everyone will find their fancy.
