Our Nature Nut Says:

Fish for 42-pound Chinook salmon, brown trout and large mouth bass! Hike backcountry trails through evergreen forests and remote lakes, and take in spectacular mountain views!

Located in the east-central part of the Columbia Plateau, between the Cascades and the Bitterroot Mountains, Coeur d'Alene & St. Joe National Forest boasts forested backcountry trails, spectacular vistas and over 4,000 miles of rivers and lowland lakes. All of the water in the area makes for perfect whitewater rapids that are great for rafting, and sport fishermen will go wild for lakes filled with Chinook salmon, kokanee (land-locked salmon), rainbow, cutthroat, brook and German brown trout, large-mouth bass and perch. Of course, these waters also offer great boating and sailing, and the St. Joe River is the highest navigable river in the world.

The Selkirk, Cabinet, Coeur d'Alene and Bitterroot mountain ranges feature glacial cirques and gem-like lakes high above timberline and craggy ridge tops, which create unforgettable vistas, and summer in the forest brings plenty of opportunities for camping, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking. In the winter, hundreds of miles of groomed trails beckon skiers and snowmobilers, with runs for beginners and experts alike at the many regional ski resorts. There are also plenty of winter-fishing opportunities at area lakes. The Idaho Panhandle National Forests cover a large area at the very northern end of Idaho, in the Idaho Panhandle.

Major transportation corridors through the forest are Interstate 90, U.S. Highways 2, 10, 95, and 95A, State Highways 3,57, and 200. Amtrak, Burlington Northern, Union Pacific, Potlatch and Spokane International Railroads cross the Idaho Panhandle.
