Outdoor Recreation in Glacier National Park, Montana

People come to Glacier National Park to hike the trails and get out on the water. The 700 miles of hiking trails offer something for everyone, from short accessible loops to multi-day treks along the Continental Divide. Popular, yet challenging hikes that take the better part of a day include the Grinnell Glacier Trail, the Crater Lake Trail and the trail to Iceberg Lake. The Grinnell Glacier trailhead is in the Many Glacier area and leads to the most accessible glacier in the park.
Kayaks, canoes, fishing and guided boat tours are available on several of the Glacier National Park lakes, including Lake McDonald near West Glacier and Two Medicine Lake near East Glacier Park.

Hiking trails in Glacier National Park traverse meadows and forests, pass lakes and waterfalls and are often above the timberline, with great views at almost every step.

Outdoor Sports around Bigfork and Flathead Lake, Montana

The receding glaciers left us Flathead Lake, the largest natural lake in the Western United States and a center for Montana outdoor recreation. The town of Bigfork makes a good base for taking boats out on the lake, fishing and hikes in the nearby Jewel Basin Hiking Area.

Outdoor Sports around Missoula, Montana

Missoula is an exciting small city that makes a great base for outdoor activities. Hiking, rafting and kayaking are accessible right out of town. The hike up Mt. Sentinel or shooting the Class III and Class IV rapids of the Clark Fork River at Alberton Gorge should build up an appetite easily satisfied at one of the wide variety of restaurants in Missoula.

Bicyclists will find that Missoula is as bike-friendly as any city in the west. Good bike trails are available right out of town and further away in Rattlesnake National Recreation Area. Long distance bikers will note that the Great Parks route and the Transamerica route meet up in Missoula. North of Missoula, on the Idaho border, the 15-mile long Hiawatha Mountain Bike Trail, traverses the Bitterroot Mountains by bridge and tunnel and is considered one of the best in the country.

Even if you don't leave Missoula, the big outdoors may come to you – mountain lions have been spotted in Missoula parks.
