Missoula, Montana Family Vacations

Missoula makes a good base for family travel in Western Montana. The city has many hiking and biking trails right in the town and more adventurous families can hike up Mt. Sentinal. Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness, 10 minutes outside of Missoula offers 73 miles of hiking trails.

Families will appreciate the fact that Missoula is a university town and has dining, entertainment and accommodations suited for families. But, you are advised to get out and enjoy the mountains, forests, rivers and lakes of Montana. Kids and adults will enjoy the area's wildlife – bighorn sheep, buffalo, mountain lions and even some grizzly and black bears.
Scan the skies for eagles, herons, ospreys and many more bird species.

Family Travel from Missoula to Glacier National Park, Montana

Heading north to Glacier National Park, several destinations are of special interest to family friendly travelers:
  • National Bison Range, less than an hour north of Missoula, will amaze you with bison, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, mountain goats and very few cars. Equally amazing will be the kids inquisitively staring out the window for the duration of the 2 hour drive.
  • Bigfork, Montana another hours and a half up the road, on the shores of Flathead Lake, makes a great base for exploring the lake and hiking the nearby trails. The town of Bigfork has all the tourist facilities needed for family travel.
  • Whitefish, Montana is less than an hour from Bigfork. The town is focused on outdoor recreation and is dominated by Big Mountain. During the summer months, the Danny On Trail to the summit is mostly snow-free. The 3.8 mile hike takes about 2 to 3 hours and can be combined (or replaced by) a gondola ride to the top. Adults, and kids over the age of 10 can experience a fascinating three-hour “Walk in the Treetops” at the Big Mountain resort. It is just what it sounds like – walking on planks suspended 60 feet above the forest floor.
  • Another 40 minutes in the car and your family has reached West Glacier and the start of the Going to the Sun Road, which crosses the park and provides access to many hikes ranging from 15 minute accessible strolls to full day hikes and longer treks.
