Our Zoo and Aquarium Expert Says:
Spend the afternoon smelling the roses! Created by Herbert Dow, the Dow Gardens follow the philosophy to "never reveal the gardens' whole beauty at first glance." With more than 1700 varieties of plants growing on 110 acres, including a collection of crabapples, rhododendrons, evergreens, and a rose garden containing most of the All American Rose selections, these gardens have something for everyone to enjoy. Take the Stream Walk path that meanders between the stream and flower beds, and breathe in the smell of the tulips, scattered perennials, lilacs, birches, rhododendrons and dogwoods.
Visitors can enjoy exploring the estate area and color garden, while kids will love the Children's Garden here, which boasts a tree house, a barnyard garden, a rainbow garden, and a weather station. Outdoorsy types will surely get a kick out of the new Whiting Forest, which has 7 different types of forest, a visitor center, hiking trails, covered bridges, and ponds. For the horticulturally minded, the gift shop has a nice library of gardening books. Those visiting in the spring should be sure to catch the very fun and fluttery butterfly exhibit.
The Dow Gardens are located at 1809 Eastman Avenue, in Midland.
