Address:Mackinac Island, Michigan

Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:

Mackinac Island has perhaps the richest history of any place in Michigan. It has been settled by Native Americans, used by French fur traders, camped on by British soldiers, frequented by summering Victorian-era aristocrats and industrialists, and finally, visited by throngs of American families. Today, much of the island is parkland and all of it off-limit to cars.

The island's quaint feel is preserved in the Victorian style best symbolized best by the 1887 Grand Hotel. Fudge and souvenir shops abound on the island and it's hard not to feel like you're in a different era with the many horse-drawn carriages milling about. But there's more than just the downtown area for families to enjoy. More than 80% of the island has been designated as a state park, and contains miles and miles of bike trails and forests. Three different ferry services are available to zip you over to Mackinac Island in under 20 minutes. Grab a bike, enjoy the island, and get a feel for its beauty.
