Boyne Mountain is actually made up of two mountains: Boyne Mountain, and her sister Boyne Highlands. Located at the tip of the Michigan peninsula, Boyne Mountain is rated number one for snowmaking in America by SKI Magazine, covering all 416 acres and 35km of groomed cross-country trails. Also the first ski resort in America to have a high speed six-seated chairlift, Boyne Mountain provides dedicated service to its patrons both on and off the slopes.
While Boyne Mountain's summit is not outstanding, coming in at 1,120 feet, the incredible diversity of trails makes up for its lack of height. With over 50 trails, and 30 acres designated especially for beginners, riders have many spots to choose from, depending on their skill level, right on up to advanced skiers and snowboarders. There are 13 chairlifts, which help facilitate more time spent on the snow than in line. And with a season running from November to April, the whole day from 9am to 4:30pm can be spent pushing up powder to your heart's delight. From the end of December to around mid-March, Boyne Mountain also offers night skiing, to make an even longer, better day.
Boyne Mountain is home to many national and local snowboarding competitions and contests, and its no surprise why. Boyne boast five progression and pro parks, and offers more railyards than any other Midwestern resort. Slide and shred your board on the rollercoaster, c-boxes, s-boxes, and swingsets, or just sit on the side and watch others catch some major air. Check out the 700 foot superpipe or the smaller halfpipe, both of which are groomed nightly to keep them fresh and ready to go.
The Austrian-American Snowsports School offers children's and adult's lessons with professionally certified instructors, and caters to the needs of its students, improving skills within a short 1 or 2 hour timeframe. Adults and children each have their own rates for rental equipment, and may choose to rent a full package or just individual pieces. There are plenty of skis, snowboards, and skiblades in stock, and guests may choose to do a "combo package," which allows riders to switch between skis and a snowboard throughout the day.
Children under the age of 8 and seniors over 70 years old ride for free at Boyne Mountain. There is a 4 or 12 hour flex ticket, in addition to AAA and military discounts with proper identification.
Additional activities onsite that are not to be missed are the ice skating rink, dog sledding tours, romantic horse drawn sleigh-rides, snowmobile tours, and the snow tubing park. All of these activities require separate entrance fees, while the sleigh-rides, snowmobiles, and dog sledding tours also require a reservation which may be arranged through the guest services desk. "Avalanche Bay," Michigan's largest indoor water park, is also available for a completely different way to spend the day or night at Boyne Mountain.
Lodging options on site include hotels, villas, lodges, and cabins, which feature ski in and out convenience in addition to kitchens. Some accommodations also offer hot tubs and saunas. Alternatively, you can head into Bay Harbor, about 20 minutes away, and choose from a selection of townhouses, cottages, historic inns, and hotels, as well as studio to 3 bedroom private houses for rent. The Odawa Casino, shopping districts, food festivals, arts and crafts shows and, of course, the cinemas are a great way to spend the night after the slopes shut down. Mouthwatering cuisines from all over the world and a cold draft beer, or chilled glass of wine, top it all off in Bay Harbor's eclectic mix of restaurants and bars.
Lake Michigan offers some of the best weather for natural snowfall, and Boyne Mountain takes full advantage of that fact. For superior coverage, and a terrific range of terrain, head to Boyne Mountain this season.
