Located at the tip of the Michigan peninsula, Boyne Highlands and her sister Boyne Mountain, are rated number one for snowmaking in America by SKI Magazine covering all 430 acres (16 just for beginners) and 45km of groomed cross-country trails. With an interchangeable pass between the two mountains, Boyne Highlands is a great choice for all riding this season.
While Boyne Highlands' summit is not outstanding, coming in at 1,290 feet, the interesting diversity of trails makes up for the lack of height. With 50 trails on 16 acres devoted to beginners, Boyne Highlands plays its strengths up wherever it can. There are not as many black diamonds here as on her sister mountain, but those they have are exceptional. There are also great cruising intermediate runs and tree runs. Eight chairlifts service all trails, including a high speed quad seater which helps facilitate spending more time spent on the snow than in line. Throughout the entire November to April season, the whole day from 9am to 4:30pm can be spent pushing up powder to your heart's delight. Boyne Highlands makes for a perfect day trip or long weekend.
Boyne Highland and her sister mountain are home to many national and local snowboarding competitions and contests, and its no surprise why. Boyne boasts five progression and pro parks, while offering more railyards than any other Midwestern resort. Slide and shred your board on the rollercoaster, c-boxes, s-boxes, and swingsets, or just sit on the side and watch others catching major air. Check out the half and quarterpipe, both of which are groomed nightly to keep them fresh and ready to go.
The Austrian-American Snowsports School offers children and adults lessons with professionally certified instructors. They cater to the individual needs of their students, often improving skills within a short 1 or 2 hour timeframe. Both adults and children have their own rates for rental equipment and may rent a full package or by individual pieces. There are plenty of skis, snowboards, and skiblades in stock, and guests may choose the "combo package" which allows riders to switch between skis and a snowboard throughout the day.
Children under the age of 8, and seniors over 70 years old, ride for free at Boyne Highlands. There is a 4 or 12 hour flex ticket, as well as AAA and Military discounts with proper identification. Boyne's interchangeable pass allows riders to switch back and forth between Boyne Mountain and the Highlands with relative ease, and the shuttle provided between the two mountains makes this an enticing offer.
Additional activities onsite that shouldn't be missed are the ice skating rink, dog sledding tours, romantic horse drawn sleigh-rides, snowmobile tours, and the snow tubing park. Each of these activities requires a separate entrance fee, while the sleigh-rides, snowmobiles and dog sledding tours also require a reservation arranged through the guest services desk. You can also try out "Avalanche Bay," Michigan's largest indoor water park, for a completely different way to spend the day or night at Boyne Mountain.
Lodging options on site include hotels, villas, lodges, and cabins which feature ski in and out convenience. In addition to private kitchens, some accommodations offer hot tubs and saunas. You can also head into Bay Harbor, about 20 minutes away, and choose from a selection of townhouses, cottages, historic inns, and hotels. There are also studio to 3 bedroom private houses available for rent there. The Odawa Casino, shopping district, food festivals, arts and crafts shows and, of course, the cinemas, are a great way to spend the night after the slopes shut down. Mouthwatering cuisines from all over the world, and a cold draft beer or chilled glass of wine to top it all off, are available in Bay Harbor's eclectic mix of restaurants and bars.
Lake Michigan offers some of the best natural snow weather and Boyne Mountain takes full advantage of that fact. For superior coverage, and a terrific range of terrain, head to Boyne Highlands this season.
