Snorkeling in Great Lakes, Upper Peninsula, Traverse City, Mackinac, Northern MI

Things to do / Travel Guide

Like scuba diving, nearly all of the snorkeling in northern Michigan takes place in and around shipwreck sites. Summer snorkeling is best on account of the all-year cold weather, however even in the summertime Great Lakes water is notoriously cold, and a wet suit may be advisable.

At the Alger Underwater Preserves near Munising, snorkel around the Bermuda, an old wooden schooner that sank in 1870. The Pictured Rocks wall site in this area is also a popular destination. Semi-guided snorkeling trips in and around Lake Superior can be scheduled on-site, and equipment rentals in the area are easy to come by.

The underwater preserves in Marquette offer snorkeling enthusiasts a view of the famous De Soto ship that was wrecked in1869 and has thereafter lain submerged at a depth between eight and 10 feet.

To see schools of perch, rock bass, suckers, and carp, snorkel along the rock pilings near the southern pier at Elmwood Township Park Beach in Traverse City. For expert snorkelers, swim beyond the swim area to the “drop-off” and take a look at a small wreck nicknamed the “Derelict.” To go here you need a mask, fins, snorkel, and a dive flag. Equipment can be rented on West Bay Shore Drive. The dive flag, required by law, can also be rented there.
