For hobby-shoppers, or those who simply wish to peruse the local goods, northern Michigan offers pleasant shopping experiences, particularly at specialty stores and regional art galleries selling crafts and items unique to northern Michigan.

Mackinaw City is famous for its fudge - here you'll find a wide variety of shops selling this specialty sweet. While in Mackinaw City, visit Mackinaw Crossings, one of northern Michigan's premiere shopping locations. Shoppers feel as if they are in a quaint Midwestern village, and a number of stores sell historical photographs of Michigan and northern Michigan's best selection of Michigan-made products.


In northern Michigan farmer's markets are a local shopping favorite, and most towns have their own. Locals and tourists often stop by for fresh honey, apple cider, maple syrup, homemade baked-goods, and jams and preserves. All these are from local and seasonal produce. Traverse City and Lake Leelanau are home to some of northern Michigan's best farmer's markets.

Nearly every town and small city in the northern Lower Peninsula has its own art gallery, usually featuring local talents. The galleries in Manistee and Charlevoix are particular favorites.

The small town of Glen Arbor, east on State Road 109, is replete with generally upscale galleries and craft shops. Here you'll also find the “largest exclusive retailer of cherry products in the United States.”
