Things to do / Travel Guide

History comes alive in northern Michigan with its interactive, imaginative historic parks, many of which re-enact the lifestyles and cultural struggles of the 17th and 19th century. For history buffs, this is the best introduction to northern Michigan's history.

Historic Parks

The Mackinac State Historic Parks are likely the most famous and well-visited historic parts in the region and the state. The six different locations with their myriad activities and presentations offer a Victorian-era experience including smoking cannons, costumed fur traders, and soldiers dressed in official red coats and black tricorne hats, and will certain delight visitors of all ages.
It is advisable to dedicate several days to these parks as the sights are many and transportation between them takes time.

In the Upper Peninsula, historic parks include a reconstructed 19th century industrial town, a tractor-pulled wagon-ride into a copper mine, and a memorial that depicts the meeting of French missionaries and Native Americans in the 17th century.

Historic Lighthouses

For travelers who want historical insight into Michigan's waterways and industry, a visit to one of Michigan's 115 historic lighthouses will provide a foray into fascinating maritime lore. While there are a plethora of lighthouses in northern Michigan, the Charlevoix South Pier Light and Presque Isle Harbor lighthouses are particularly interesting for their unique architecture and histories. At Presque Isle Harbor, be sure to visit Adeline Sim's grave to find out how the lighthouse played a role in her induction into the historically all-male Free Mason brotherhood. See the Attractions - Architecture section for a more thorough exposé on northern Michigan lighthouses.
