Things to do / Travel Guide
Boating in northern Michigan is both pleasant and easy. Small watercraft or larger sailboats, pontoons or powerboats, can be rented in many towns located along inland lakes and large rivers throughout the region. They are particularly to be found in areas near Lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan, as well as the Betsie and Au Sable Rivers. Popular routes include self-guided boating expeditions around Lake Charlevoix and the Grand Traverse Bay. The ideal boating season in northern Michigan is from late May to mid-October.
Many of the rental shops and liveries also rent out waverunners, jet-skis, and water skiing equipment, and will deliver them to the boat launch of your choice. To operate a jet-ski or personal watercraft, Michigan law requires a Boater Safety Certificate. Before renting a boat, travelers should familiarize themselves with the boating laws, minimum age regulations, and required equipment.
