Things to do / Travel Guide
In northern Michigan visitors will find a variety of venues that make it worth venturing out of the hotel after dark. Because gambling is legal on the Indian reservations in northern Michigan, you will find a large number of casinos. Some of the best gambling can be found in Mt. Pleasant in the Northern Lower Peninsula and Harris in the Upper Peninsula.
If gambling is not your preference, experience a bit of the local scene at a small-town pub featuring live entertainment and rock, country and hip hop music and dancing in Traverse City.
For headliners and celebrities, schedule your trip around the calendar of the Interlochen Summer Arts Festival, which takes place every year between June and August in the Grand Traverse area. Music, dance, and drama events ranging from classic to popular, religious to secular, draw crowds of all ages and with all kinds of interests and cultural backgrounds.
In Charlevoix, the Castle Farms complex hosts a variety of performances from comedy, to dinner theater, to classical symphonies.
In Cheboygan, in the lower Northern Peninsula, the Cheboygan Opera House is a beautiful restored building, originally constructed in 1877. This theater, known for its outstanding acoustics, has become the entertainment hub for the Straits Area. The Northland Players, Cheboygan's own theater company, perform here, as do a wide variety of entertainers.
Though a somewhat pricier option, Mackinaw Theater in Mackinaw City has a wide selection of concerts and performances throughout the year, both matinee and evening events.
