Explore a national forest which contains 35% of California's Wild and Scenic Rivers. With expansive views of landscapes, peaks and rivers, as well as endless water recreation, Six Rivers National Forest is a true nature lover's dream.
From colossal redwoods to mixed conifers and deciduous trees, from glades to open meadows, Six Rivers National Forest is brimming with nature that will delight those with a love of the outdoors. The forest boasts six rivers, and six botanical areas, home to the rare carnivorous California Pitcher Plant. The Smith, Klamath, Eel, Trinity, Van Duzen and Mad Rivers all offer great opportunities for water recreation, from rafting and kayaking to swimming and tubing.
If you prefer your fun on land, why not auto-tour 27 miles of the Smith River National Scenic Byway, drive 350 miles of backcountry roads, or hike or horseback ride over 65 miles of trails in the rugged Siskiyou Wilderness. The South Kelsey and Summit Valley Trails in the Siskiyou Wilderness and the Salmon Mountain Trail in the Trinity Alps Wilderness make great day-hikes for the whole family, and the Myrtle Creek Trail self-guided interpretive trail has diverse flora and fauna, forested ridges and peaks, and mountain meadows and lakes for all to enjoy. Of course, the waterways of the Six Rivers National Forest are renowned for world-class fishing for steelhead, Coho and Chinook salmon and trout, and even white sturgeon.
If you find that one day at the Six Rivers National Forest is not enough, there are 19 established campgrounds, or if you prefer more solitude, most of the forest is open for free dispersed camping.
The Six Rivers National Forest lies in northwest California, reaching south from the Oregon border in a long and narrow 140-mile band.
