Snorkeling off the Coast of Sonoma and Mendocino in Northern California

With great anticipation, Northern California residents wait for April 1 and the start of abalone season. Although the water is still quite cool at that time of the year in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, free divers (sorry, scuba divers) can harvest abalone (up to three a day) and enjoy one of the gourmet delicacies of the area. For those not excited by the concept of eating these giant mollusks, just looking at walls of abalone is worth putting on that snorkel gear. The friendly seals present up and down the Mendocino, Sonoma and Northern California coast definitely add to the snorkeling experience.

Snorkeling off the Northern California Coast is well suited for all levels of experience. There are many sheltered coves offering easy water access. Some are located in the State Park beaches which offer facilities, including camping. Don't be surprised by the cold water and be aware of currents and water conditions.
