Visit the Winslow meteor Crater and witness a 950 foot deep crater created by an asteroid fragment, which fell from space. Touch a 1406 pound meteorite fragment and see the Astronaut Wall of Fame.
Fifty thousand years ago, a rock fragment estimated to have weighed 175 tons, entered the earth's atmosphere traveling 40,000 miles per hour and crashed into what is now the Arizona desert. Today, the resulting crater has been turned into a popular Northern Arizona attraction with displays on the never-ending process of impacts and collisions in our solar system and a Meteor Crater Interactive Learning Center with 24 exhibits, making it the most extensive and informative museum of its type in the world. The Winslow Meteor Crater also houses two interactive computer displays that contain high-tech graphics on space, meteorites and asteroids, the solar system, and the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet that impacted Jupiter.
Everyone in the family will enjoy the "Collisions and Impacts" movie and kids will definitely get a special kick out of an actual Apollo space test capsule, and American Astronaut Wall of Fame. There's a 1,406 pound meteorite fragment on display to view and touch, as well as observation telescopes in 4 observation areas to look more closely at points of interest in the crater.
If you are seeking more outdoor adventure can take the guided rim tour. Just be sure to wear proper hiking shoes for the 1/3 mile hike around the crater rim. And if planning a summer visit, be sure to arrive before it gets too hot, especially if you want to take the rim tour.
