Red Rock State Park is a center for environmental education due to its land-based ecosystem which borders on Oak Creek. The park has an extensive collection of guide books which can be viewed with prior arrangements and self-guided trails with themes such as ethno-botany, as well as a school field trip environmental education program. Some of the educational highlights that are just plain fun are the biotic exhibits and the moonlight hikes. The family-oriented trail system at Red Rock includes the Eagle's nest loop, which has the highest point in the park at an elevation gain of 300 feet, and the Apache Fire loop, which are joined together by the Coyote Ridge trail. All the trails here are on fire with color including bright reds, oranges, and yellows, and are filled with Juniper and Cypress woodlands, sensational red rock vistas and greenery that's home to countless wildlife.
From Red Rock State Park - Sedona, Arizona:
The Red Rock State Park property was acquired by the Arizona State Parks Board in 1986 and the park was opened to the public in 1991. The park's 286 acres were originally part of the Smoke Trail Ranch, owned by Jack and Helen Frye. Arizona's famous Oak Creek meanders through this scenic park, creating a diverse riparian habitat abounding with plants and wildlife. This riparian habitat, the land-based ecosystem closely associated with Oak Creek, provides the setting and the opportunity for Red Rock State Park to offer a center for environmental education.
