The sheer size and power of this famous system of colored canyons is enough to overwhelm even the most adventurous visitor, but that feeling is just a part of the incredible journey. With 1.2 million acres preserved, a little planning is in order. Most visitors enter through the Grand Canyon's South Rim, which is much more developed than its North Rim. You can experience breathtaking views right from your car window or stop at the many observation points. A hike down into the canyon can take anywhere from 15 minutes up to several days. Keep in mind it takes approximately twice as long to hike up the canyon as it does to hike down. About two days will be needed to hike all the way down to the Colorado River from the South Rim and even more time should be allotted if the North Rim is your starting point.
Reservations for mule trips or on-site camping are essential, and those interested in backcountry camping will need a permit - apply well in advance.
The famed Colorado River, an experience in itself, is not to be outdone. Whitewater rafting down the river is usually an extended event, lasting anywhere from three days to three weeks. There are dozens of commercial companies who would be more than willing to arrange a river tour for you and your group, but again, advanced planning is key.

The Grand Canyon is more than a great chasm carved over millennia through the rocks of the Colorado Plateau. It is more than an awe-inspiring view. It is more than a pleasuring ground for those who explore the roads, hike the trails, or float the currents of the turbulent Colorado River.
