History of Northern Arizona Prior to Statehood
Northern Arizona was the home of the Anasaz, Hopi and Hohokam people, who succeeded in making life very difficult for the Spanish explorers looking for the treasures of Cibola. As a result, Northern Arizona was never an important part of the Spanish, and later, the Mexican settlement in North America. The Mexican War and later the Civil War did not have a significant impact on the region. In fact, even though Arizona sided with the Confederacy, there were no battles in Northern Arizona.
Northern Arizona History in the Twentieth Century
In 1912, after enough farmers, ranchers and miners had settled the area, Arizona became the last of the 48 contiguous states to join the Union. Northern Arizona's Grand Canyon has become one of the top tourist destinations and Prescott and Sedona have become leading vacation and retirement communities.
