Taking the Train to the Grand Canyon, Arizona
Amtrak's Southwest Chief service cuts across Northern Arizona, through Flagstaff and xxx on its way southwest from Chicago. Amtrak provides connecting bus service, via Greyhound, south to Sedona. Heading north from Williams, the Grand Canyon Railway runs historic trains on the scenic ride to the Grand Canyon.
Think twice before choosing this option over a rental car, the prices are higher and the train travels at an average speed of about 30 miles per hour. On the positive side, your trip may include a simulated train robbery and some on-board musicians. On the negative side, Amtrak and the Grand Canyon Railway do not seem to have their schedules coordinated very well – be prepared for a night in Williams, AZ or a few hours hanging around the Williams Junction train station in the early morning. Oh well, we really did try finding a fun train route to the Grand Canyon.
The daily trips to Flagstaff takes 12 hours from Los Angeles and 31 hours from Chicago. Closer by, Albuquerque, New Mexico is only 6 hours from Flagstaff, Arizona by train. Note that these trains often run behind schedule.
