Grand Canyon, Arizona Family Vacation
Even the most jaded, indoor-loving kids will be awed by the site of the Grand Canyon. It's a view you just can't get on a Sony PlayStation 3, even with full HD. The mile-deep and 18 mile-wide scenery changes from viewpoint to viewpoint and with the descent into the canyon. Families with hiking in their blood can attempt the trip all the way to the Colorado river, combined with an overnight stay at Phantom Ranch. Another, quite costly (almost $500) option is the mule trip to the bottom.
Most groups traveling with kids (in fact, most groups overall) will suffice with some of the simpler and paved rim trails as well as shorter trails into the canyon. The Bright Angel Trail is the easiest. Families can also enjoy horseback riding, wagon ride and campfires at Apache Stables. Some pointers for family travel to the Grand Canyon –
- Get an early start. The canyon heats up fast. Staying in the park helps.
- Avoid the heat of the summer, if possible and beware that snow cover on the South Rim may prevent hiking down without crampons, in the winter.
- Hiking into the canyon is not your usual hike. It gets hotter as you descend and the return is uphill, so allow lots of time.
- Don't attempt both the North Rim and the South Rim in the one trip.
And, plan a second family vacation to the North Rim combined with the Utah parks. Once you have introduced your kids to life beyond Nintendo there is no turning back.
