The Castillo of San Marcos, a coquina shell fort which once protected St. Augustine, Florida, was built in the late 1600s and passed through British hands before the United States eventually purchased Florida in 1821. The fort boasts a very lengthy historical journey that visitors can learn about in-depth when visiting the museum within the Castillo compound. Exciting reenactments of the fort's events are held on most weekends and may include cannon and/or musket-firing demonstrations.
