They are the planes that fly the unfriendly skies, and they are all on display at the Air Force Armament Museum, the only facility in the U.S. dedicated to the display of Air Force armament. Numerous indoor displays document the history of the armament development of the Air Force, and visitors can view a variety of historical Air Force planes, from a B-17 World War II bomber to an F-4 Phantom II jet.
In addition to samples of planes from each war era (World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War), the museum exhibits a wide array of reconnaissance, fighter and bomber planes, as well as guns, bombs and missiles. The museum also features the Sikes Antique Pistol Collection, with over 180 handguns, including dueling pistols, western six-shooters, Civil War pistols, and a variety of early military weapons. In addition, visitors can enjoy a half-hour movie (shown continuously throughout the day at the museum's theater), entitled "Arming the Air Force," that traces the history of Eglin Air Force Base and its role in the development of armament.
The Air Force Armament Museum is located near the entrance of the Eglin Air Force Base's main gate on Highway 85, between Shalimar (Fort Walton Beach area) and the Okaloosa County Regional Airport.
