The Museum of Florida History was established in 1977 to collect, preserve, and display the past and present cultures of the state of Florida. It manages to do so with great success and lots of cool exhibits. This state history museum boasts educational programs, and large collections of artifacts, which reflect the peoples who have lived in Florida, and their reaction to their cultural and natural surroundings. Visitors can get up close and personal with ancient artifacts from Native American tribes, a reconstructed steamboat, and other treasures from the 16th and 17th centuries. Civil War buffs will have plenty of memorabilia to enjoy here, from flags to weapons and clothing, and the kids will love the 11-foot-tall mastodon which greets visitors at the front door, and the gold and silver treasures taken from sunken Spanish galleons. You'll also find a citrus packing house from the 1920s and '30s, and a Tin Can Tourist camp on display. From furniture and campaign ephemera, to portraits and editorial cartoons, you're sure to find something here that will capture your fancy.
Museum admission is free; so there's really no excuse to stay home! You can get here from the intersection of routes 90 and 27 by heading south on 27, and turning right onto Pensacola Street. Take a left onto Bronough Street, and park in the garage or one of the metered spaces at the end of the street.
