Our History Buff Says:

On Amelia Island, north of Fernandina Beach, you can visit Fort Clinch. This was a five-point fort built in the 1840s, but never finished. The Union occupied the stronghold during the Civil War, and on its account many Yankees had their first introduction to the South. During the Spanish-American War in 1898 it was briefly reactivated, but has never been used since for military purposes. The fort is located in Fort Clinch State Park, where visitors can supplement their love of historic sites with swimming, boating, fishing and even tours of underground caverns. Camping is allowed in the park.
