Things to do / Travel Guide

During the winter, storms from the Gulf of Mexico bring strong winds and precipitation to northeast Florida and the Panhandle, the region's Gulf Coast in particular. In between these storms, clear, chilly weather prevails. Spring brings with it warm temperatures with long stretches of dry and sunny weather. The sunny, hot, and humid weather in the summer causes brief tropical thunderstorms on an almost daily basis. If it ever gets to be too hot or humid, relive the region's history by switching on an air conditioning unit; after all, this (Apalachicola, to be specific) is the place where A/C was invented, along with the refrigerator, in 1842. The thunderstorm frequency decreases somewhat in the fall, during which the region's waters warm up the air, meaning many fine, sunny days during this dry season.

Weather-wise, the best time to visit the region is during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall, when the temperatures are warm and the humidity is relatively light. Incidentally, spring is also the best time to see the famous azaleas in bloom, though there is excellent foliage in the fall. Notably, hurricanes are tracked very closely in this region, especially from mid-August to mid-October, when the likelihood for them is highest. Though rain falls in northeast Florida and the Panhandle year round, most rainfall occurs from June-September.
