Things to do / Travel Guide
Northeastern Florida and the Panhandle is pretty flat, so you'll find most of the scenic overlooks in the region close to the many and varying bodies of water. A good view of the Jacksonville skyline can be had by looking across the St. Johns River in the area of Acosta Bridge and Fuller Warren Bridge. There are also a few lighthouses that offer nice views of the immediate surroundings.
St. Augustine Lighthouse
The St. Augustine Lighthouse, for instance, is open to the public. Its height reaches 165 feet above sea level, or 219 steps. The lighthouse is located in the newer section of the city, and it is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a barrier island. The view you get from the top, therefore, is of the island to the east and the ocean farther off. There's lush vegetation and the continuation of the residential area to the south, and the older city of St. Augustine to the west.
Pensacola Lighthouse
Another lovely lookout point is the Pensacola Lighthouse, 150 feet and 177 steps high. You can go to the top of the tower on Sundays, from May-October. The lighthouse is located in Warrington, slightly southwest of Pensacola, on the grounds of Naval Air Station Pensacola. The tallest lighthouse on the Gulf of Mexico, you can see for miles in all directions from the tower.
