Things to do / Travel Guide
Here are some parks in Daytona Beach and Jacksonville, to find when you and the kids just need a break from all the state fairs and festivals. Find some shade and read a book, and let your kids wake you in a few hours (or minutes).
Daytona Beach
On Bellevue Avenue and South Beach Street you'll find Bethune Point Park, where you and the kids can picnic and play ball on the adjacent fields. It's also right off the Halifax River.
Jacksonville
In its role as the largest city in the continental U.S., Jacksonville (and Jacksonville Beach) is proud to operate the largest urban park system as well. There are more than 300 parks sprawling over 80,000 acres. In these parks - located downtown, along the ocean or river, in the more residential areas, and in a variety of other places - there is plenty of room for your kids to run around and enjoy themselves, play organized sports, or partake in other recreational activities.
There are parks in Jacksonville Beach, such as Huguenot Memorial Park and Kathryn Abby Hanna Park, with bird observatories, picnic shelters, and, of course, swimming on the beach.
The largest of Jacksonville's parks is Westside Regional Park, located south of the city center on Roosevelt Boulevard. Its 509 acres is filled with activities kids can enjoy. If all else fails, they can run around till they drop. There are walking trails, some animals and birds to look at, and grills for outdoor cooking, among other things. A similar park, located in the same area, is Ringhaver Park/Ortega River Nature Preserve. There are playgrounds, soccer fields, canoeing on the Ortega River, and walking paths.
