Geography of Jacksonville, Destin, Daytona, Pensacola, Northeast FL

Things to do / Travel Guide

The northwest Florida and Panhandle region can be easily divided into - you guessed it - northwest Florida and the Panhandle. Northwest Florida extends from St. Mary's River in the north, on the state line with Georgia, and in the south approximately up to the line between Cedar Key on the Gulf Coast and Daytona Beach on the Atlantic Coast. St. Augustine is on the coast north of Daytona Beach; and Jacksonville, the most populous city in Florida, is located farther north, in the northwest corner of the region. The city of Gainesville is located northeast of Cedar Key, very much in this part of the region's center.

Florida's Panhandle extends all the way to the Perdido River on the Alabama border, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico at Perdido Bay. Pensacola, however, is the major western marker. Within the Panhandle are the cities along the Gulf Coast east of Pensacola: Destin, Apalachicola, and Panama City and its beach. The region's northern border is the Florida-Alabama state line. Florida's capital, Tallahassee, is located close to the center of the Panhandle.

To the west of Florida's Panhandle is Alabama's Mobile Bay. North of the Panhandle to the west is Alabama, and to the east is Georgia. South of the region are the tourist meccas and home to Mickey Mouse and friends (and competitors) in Central Florida.
