Our Botanical Gardens Expert Says:
Come explore one of America's foremost public gardens. This 250-acre natural landmark is spread over natural terrain surrounding the Bronx river gorge, and contains 16 gardens, a cascading waterfall, and the historic Snuff Mill. The Garden is also home to the country's largest Victorian greenhouse, and houses the International Plant Science Center. Highlights include the 27 specialty gardens, an exceptional orchid collection, and 40 acres of uncut forest. Special events are held throughout the year and include such events as the Tulip Festival to free Sunday afternoon concerts in summer. For kids, there's the Children's Adventure Garden, a 12-acre, indoor-outdoor museum with a boulder maze, giant animal topiaries, and a plant discovery center. There are also year-round educational programs, musical events, bird-watching excursions, lectures, special family programs, and many more activities. For example, there's the annual Holiday Train Show, where railway trains and trolleys wind their way through more than 100 replicas of historic New York buildings and attractions made from plants and natural materials. To get here from the west side of Manhattan, take the West Side Highway north to Henry Hudson Parkway, and take that north to Mosholu Parkway till Exit 24. Continue to the end, and turn right onto Kazimiroff Boulevard At the third traffic light, turn left into the Garden.
