Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:
Times Square is one of the city's most famous landmarks, with millions of lights and dozens of shows. Times Square was named after the New York Times newspaper, which once had its headquarters there. The paper has since moved elsewhere, but the square has kept the famous moving headlines "Zipper" that the paper installed in 1928 to inform passersby of the latest news. Since 1907, Times Square has been the site of New Year's Eve ball drop, which signifies the beginning of the new year. To fully appreciate the historical aspects of this attraction, it is recommended that you take advantage of the free walking tour offered every Friday at the Times Square Visitors Center.
