They say the best things in life are free. Well, now you can add Manhattan's famed Staten Island Ferry to your list.
Reduced from 50 cents to nada in 1997, the Staten Island Ferry serves 20 million people a year—that's about 60,000 passengers a day not including weekends. Definitely one of the classic must-dos of NYC, the Staten Island Ferry has long been a regular on TV shows and in movies, from Sex in the City to Basketball Diaries. It is operated by the New York City Department of Transportation and runs between Manhattan and Staten Island, departing from Manhattan near Whitehall Street, at the southernmost tip of Manhattan near Battery Park and on Staten Island, it arrives and departs from St. George Ferry Terminal.
So what's so great about a free ferry ride? Well, for starters, you can see the famous New York Harbor up close, as well as the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island. Fun for all ages, the Ferry will give you great views of Governor's Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, lower Manhattan and Wall Street's skyscrapers and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn. After hopping aboard, try grabbing for one of the seats on the benches on the borders of the boat, so you can enjoy the overlook to the harbor—and on the ride back, (each leg of the trip is about half an hour), switch sides so that you can take some different views. Also-be sure to bring a jacket, as the winds can be chilly even in the warmer months. And as the Ferry pulls in to Manhattan, walk up to the front of the boat and snap a picture or two, it's a great view you'll want to capture on film to remember your trip on the Staten Island Ferry again and again.
