Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:
Step back in time and imagine life in New York back in the mid-1800s. Stroll the cobblestone streets while enjoying historic Manhattan architecture and the great restaurants and shopping you know and love at one of NYC's must-sees. <
Though grunge fans may recognize it as the place where the original version of Nirvana's "In Bloom" video was filmed in 1990, South Street Seaport has actually been an epicenter of immigration, trade, and commerce in New York City for over 350 years. Located adjacent to the Financial District, it is still home to the largest and oldest collection of historic architecture in Manhattan, and today, operates mostly as a mall and tourism center. Along with the 11 square blocks of historic buildings, there are piers, and lots of great shops to enjoy. History buffs: you'll adore the renovated original mercantile buildings and sailing ships, and your nose will surely point the way to the former Fulton Fish Market. Also: don't miss the South Street Seaport Museum, also known as America's National Maritime Museum, which sits in a 12 square-block historic district that's the site of the original port of New York City. Be sure to bring the kids out on weekends when afternoons are all about music, art, and other activities for children 4 and older and swing by the historical vessels, including the Flying P-Liner and museum ships which are docked at the Seaport while you're at it. Your experience will only be complete after chowing down on lunch at one of the restaurants while taking in the deck-views of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Heights.
