Visit the Riverside Church in New York City, where the three "I"s are honored—interdenominational, interracial, and international. All are welcome through the doors of this grand gothic-style structure that dates back to the late 1920s. Over 75 years of services have been held at the Riverside Church and guests are invited to take part in the ongoing historic service.
The Riverside Church is modeled after the 13th century gothic cathedral in Chartres, France. Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, just by the Hudson River, the church stretches out over two city blocks, is nearly 400 feet tall, and is filled with beauty and majesty, inside and out. Being one of the highest structures in the area, the Riverside Church takes advantage of its great heights and offers guests access to the bell tower and observation deck where they'll be greeted by fantastic views of the city and of the Hudson River. The church also houses the world's largest carillon!
Tours are available of the art, architecture, and history of the Riverside Church. You can catch a free tour after the Sunday morning Service of Worship. It lasts one hour, meets at the First Balcony, and requires no registration. Other tours are available during the week for groups of five or more on topics that are planned around the participants' interests. Reservations are required for these personalized tours. A café serving affordable ethnic dishes and a gift shop are also on the premises and are highly recommended.
