The Marine Air Terminal, located at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York, was built in 1939 to handle sea planes. It is an art deco style building with a two story central circular core, two single story wings, and an attic—all coming together to look like one of the original passenger planes of yesteryear. A huge mural, entitled "Flight", lines the walls, and is the largest mural of the Works Projects Administration from the Great Depression.
The Clipper planes were the first planes to depart from the Marine Air Terminal, the first one on March 26, 1939. The Clippers were seaplanes run by Pan American Airways, also known as "flying boats". Service of the now obsolete Clippers came to an abrupt stop with the outbreak of World War II. After the war, the Marine Air Terminal was used mainly as a waiting area, but since 1985, the terminal has become active again, mainly for shuttle services between New York and Boston and Washington, D.C.
The Marine Air Terminal is not as much a tourist attraction, as it is a place for travelers on the go to stop by and marvel at the architecture and history of passenger planes in New York – as you'll see, we've come a long way! Enjoy your travels!
