Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:
Joggers, parents and kids, rollerbladers and walkers enjoy this quiet edge of Manhattan, five minutes from the World Financial Center and the financial center of the world. The Battery Park City Promenade is more correctly referred to as the Esplanade, since that is the correct term for a waterfront promenade. Either way, the walk covers the entire length of Battery City Park and its Hudson River waterfront. The southern end of the Battery Park Esplanade connects up with South Cove and beyond to Battery Park. Heading north, beyond North Cove, the promenade continues to the northern edge of the past the World Financial Center. The entire length is lined with parks, benches, sculpture, walking paths and bike paths. You may even catch a volleyball game, the only one walking distance from the center of world finance. Head inland a block or two for some nice places to grab a snack or enjoy a more leisurely meal. To sum things up, this is what you should do for an exciting day in Lower Manhattan:
Start in Battery Park and head north along the esplanade, making sure to get a good shot of the Statue of Liberty. Spend some time at the museums along the way, including the Skyscraper Museum. Continue north and cut through the Winter Garden on the way to a visit to Ground Zero. Head back to the esplanade, beyond the World Financial Center to North Cove where you can catch a water taxi for a view of Manhattan Island from the water.
The Battery Park City Promenade is not to be confused with the Admiral Dewey Promenade which wraps around the lower tip of Manhattan at Battery Park. Confused? You see the little round fort at the tip of the island? That's Castle Clinton, which was a fort off the coast of Manhattan, so pretty much everywhere you will be walking was once in the Hudson River or the New York Bay.
