Our Sports Superfan Says:
It's one of the hardest golf courses in the world, and home of "The Massacre at Winged Foot" in 1974. Take a difficult par-72 course, turn it into a par 70, throw in the notorious U.S. Open roughs, and it's no surprise that Winged Foot Golf Club has seen some of the highest winning scores in major championship history.
The West Course has hosted five U.S. Opens over the years, with Hale Irwin's +7 in 1974 and Geoff Ogilvie's +5 in 2006 being two of the worst-scoring champions in major history. Ogilvie's win was also noteworthy because it saw the 72nd hole collapse of Phil Mickelson, who double bogeyed the final hole when he only needed a par to win and a bogey for a playoff. The West Course has also hosted two U.S. Amateur Championships, the most recent of which was in 2006. The East Course was the home of two U.S. Women's Opens and one U.S. Senior Open. Taken together, the club made history in 2005 as the only one to ever have two courses ranked in the top 100 of Golf Digest's best courses in America.
Winged Foot opened in 1921, and was designed by famed course architect A.W. Tillinghast. It is located in Mamaroneck, N.Y., about 30 miles northeast of Manhattan. During tournaments, Metro-North offers train service to the club.
