With its famous amusement park, aquarium, and hot dog-eating contest, all Coney Island needed was a professional volleyball tournament to complete the beach atmosphere. In 2006, even that happened, as the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) moved a tournament here from the west coast, to become what is now the Brooklyn Open.
Held at the end of August, just before New York beach season ends, the Brooklyn Open features men's and women's competitions, starting Friday morning at 9 a.m. and lasting through to Sunday evening. Tickets are available for either single sessions on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, or for the whole weekend package. There are also group and camp rates available. Of course, with all of the other things to do in Coney Island and, all the more so, in New York City as a whole, you don't have to come just for the volleyball tournament, but if it's on your itinerary get set for some world-class volleyball action.
