Our Show & Concert Fan Says:
Let's not just take for granted what Dorothy tells us in The Wizard of Oz; it's time to learn the real story of the Wicked Witch! Wicked tells the funny and often tragic untold story of Elphaba, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and her sometimes friend, Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. But in this prequel to The Wizard of Oz, we learn that good and evil are not always what they seem. In fact, they can quite often appear as their complete opposites…
Wicked takes place mostly before Dorothy arrives in Oz, and through this intricate tale and fantastic lyrics, we learn about the histories of Oz and its citizens ("Ozians"), as well as those of the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow.
The musical Wicked is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. Songs and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz. Wicked has been nominated for numerous Tony Awards and has won for Best Actress, Scenic Design, and Costume Design.
Wicked is the longest running show ever put on at the Gershwin Theatre. This Art Nouveau-style theater originally opened in 1972 as the Uris Theatre and was used as a theater and a concert hall. It was renamed the George Gershwin Theatre in 1983 to honor George Gershwin, one of the greatest composers of American claim.
The George Gershwin Theatre has seen many great performances over the years including Gigi in 1973, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Count Basie in 1975, Sweeney Todd in 1979, Annie in 1981, Show Boat in 1983 and 1995, Singin' in the Rain in 1985, Oklahoma! in 2002, and then finally Wicked in 2003.
Meeting friends before the show? Tell them to meet you in the American Theatre Hall of Fame, located in the lobby. You'll find costumes, photos, props, and other memorabilia of some of your favorite Broadway stars like Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury, John Raitt, and many more.
Get tickets to Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre and you'll see for yourself why this smash hit has broken box office records around the world!
