Our Show & Concert Fan Says:
Get ready for a story about the everlasting ties of family, romance, and the responsibilities that come with both – but with music and dancing that will make you want to jump out of your seat and join the action on stage!
Mamma Mia! is a smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA and is composed by original ABBA composers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. If you are an ABBA fan than it goes without saying that you will absolutely love Mamma Mia. It is the story of Sophie, a 20-year old girl who is about to be married on a small Greek island. She finds her mom's old diary and discovers that her father is one of three different men. She invites all three men to her wedding (without her mother's knowledge) so she can size them up to determine which will be the one who will walk her down the isle.
Needless to say, the three men come and have a funny and at times poignant reunion with Sophie's mom and with the girl who may or may not be their daughter….
Sitting in the beautiful Winter Garden Theatre, looking up at the large stage filled with Broadway stars, and hearing such familiar songs as "Mamma Mia", "Dancing Queen", and "Super Trouper", you'll feel like you're a member of Sophie's wedding. Or maybe you'll feel like you're at an ABBA concert. Either way, you'll have a great time.
The Winter Garden Theatre is one of the older Broadway theaters. It was originally built to be the American Horse Exchange back in 1896, but then was sold and redesigned to be a theater in 1911. It opened with the musical La Belle Parce. The Winter Theatre is best known as housing the musical Cats which ran for 19 years, starting in 1982. In 2002 the theater was renamed the Cadillac Winter Garden Theatre, but was then changed back to its original name in 2007.
Other notable shows that have been performed on the Winter Garden's extra-large stage include Peter Pan in 1954, The Unsinkable Molly Brown in 1960, Funny Girl in 1964, Gypsy in 1971, Beatlemania in 1977, and the current Mamma Mia! which has been on stage since 2002.
Showtimes for Mamma Mia are Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm, with additional shows Sundays at 7:00pm and Wednesday and Sunday matinees at 2:00pm. The Winter Garden Theatre is located at 1634 Broadway in New York City.
