Our Show & Concert Fan Says:
Hakuna Matata! It means there's no reason to worry – tickets are still available for one of the world's most spectacular shows, Disney's The Lion King! It is the combination of music, choreography, and the uncanny ability to transfer the plains of Africa to the Broadway stage that make The Lion King an unforgettable experience. And with music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a musical score by Hans Zimmer – three all-time Broadway and movie music greats – you can be sure that you'll be singing the music from The Lion King forever!
The Lion King opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater in 1997 and went on to win a Tony Award in 1998 for Best Musical. It then moved to the Minskoff Theatre (its current location) in 2006.
The Broadway production of The Lion King is based on the Disney movie The Lion King which came out in 1994. It is a story for children and adults alike, about Simba, a lion cub who is forced to leave his rightful position as the new king of the jungle, before regaining the courage to return to his home, Pride Rock, and continuing in the steps of his father. The story, paired with its majestic and fun lyrics, is a moving and powerful story about pride, courage, family, and responsibility.
The set for The Lion King is a little different than what was needed for Fiddler on the Roof, which took the stage prior to The Lion King. That's why it took more than six months of intense refurbishing and over 200 craftsmen, architects, and artists to get the Minskoff Theatre, a popular Broadway venue, ready for the big switch. But they definitely chose the right theater – the Minskoff has the highest seat capacity of any other Broadway theater, allowing over 1,900 guests to enjoy The Lion King all at once! Make sure you're one of them!
The Minskoff Theatre is located at 1515 Broadway in midtown Manhattan. It was named for Sam Minskoff and Sons, the builders and owners of the building. Irene, starring Debbie Reynolds, was the first show to appear at the Minskoff, in 1973. Other shows of note at the Minskoff over the years have included The Tap Dance Kid in 1986, Cabaret in 1988, Sunset Boulevard in 1994, The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1998, Saturday Night Fever in 1999, and Fiddler on the Roof in 2004. The Lion King has been performed at the Minskoff Theatre since 2006. Showtimes are Wednesdays-Saturdays at 8:00pm, Tuesdays at 7:00pm, and matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:00pm and Sundays at 3:00pm.
