The Whitney Museum of American Art houses over 12,000 works including sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, photography, and multimedia presentations. It is one of the world's foremost collections of 2oth-century American art. Founded in 1931, with just 700 art objects, the museum has grown considerably over the years and continues to grow.
The Whitney Museum of American Art features artists such as Kiki Smith, Edward Kienholz, Tim Hawkinson, Louise Nevelson, David Wojnarowicz, and a special tribute to Edward Hopper with some 2500 oils and watercolor paintings showcased on the museum's walls. The galleries contain all varieties of arts from Abstract Expressionism to today's modern art.
Additional exhibitions on display include Lawrence Weiner's "As Far as the Eye Can See", Kara Walker's "My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love", Mark Bradford's "Neither New Nor Correct", Piotr Uklanski's "Summer Love", complete a delightful array of American artists proudly displaying the achievements of American art throughout the ages.
The museum's Frances Mulhall Achilles Library contains over 37,000 books with over 500 linear feet of vertical files on American art. The library categorizes the rise of modern art and American artists with the most comprehensive research collection in the field of 20th-century art. Limited library access is available to visiting scholars, by appointment only.
The museum store is filled with collectibles and Sarabeth's Restaurant at the Whitney Museum of American Art offers excellent food for those looking to catch a meal or light snack.
Located at 75th and Madison Ave., the museum can be reached by Subway 6 (walk two blocks west to Madison Ave.) or by buses M1, M2, M3 or M4 to 74th St. Two parking garages offer discounts with Whitney ticket validation, one at 35 East 75th St. (10% discount), and the other at 68 East 80th St. (3 hours for $20).
