Founded in 1881, the collections at Staten Island Museum date from 1905. They cover a range of artistic styles and periods, including those about the history, people, and culture of Staten Island, as well as exhibits of world civilizations. With over two million artifacts and specimens from ancient to contemporary periods, this museum promises an exciting afternoon, no matter where you're from in the country or world.
Although Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts from the Ancient world, were being collected as early as 1911, the major bulk of the art collection came to the Museum post-1930. Over the years, acquisitions have included portraits of prominent Staten Islanders, such as with Ernest L. Ipsen's double portrait of Mrs. Fulton Mills and her son Arthur.
In addition to local art, the museum also offers visitors plenty of opportunities to learn about natural history. Located just two blocks from the Ferry Terminal, visitors can take a trip through time in the Staten Island Ferry exhibit; see exotic insects, glowing rocks, and other unusual natural phenomena in the Hall of Natural Sciences. The Family Gallery offers fun exhibits and hands-on projects for young visitors. There are programs such as Science for Young People and Science Club with Mr. Discovery for youngsters ages 8 to 13. Older museum visitors are invited to enjoy lectures, walking tours, concerts, and meetings of study groups and clubs on a variety of subjects. The Museum is located at 75 Stuyvesant Place, at the corner of Wall Street, just two blocks from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.
