Prepare your children for lift-off as they begin their voyage of discovery about the world around them as you step into the Staten Island Children's Museum. Filled with interactive exhibitions and creative workshops, children will have a hands-on, fun filled educational experience. They can play giant board games, feel how a spider catches a meal, create their own insects, help pollinate flowers, examine a bee-hive, feel what's it's like to live in an ant hill, and even watch butterflies being born.
For the swashbucklers, explore Block Harbor and captain a pirate ship, lookout from the upper deck through a telescope, cook in the gallery, or ring the bell if you see any approaching enemies! Children can also pretend to be firefighters in Ladder 11, or explore a rainforest canopy and cave. At the Great Explorations exhibit children can walk on snow shoes, drive a dogsled, build an igloo, or drive down to the ocean floor. They can even host their own radio show! For those who like to dress up, Portia's Playhouse is filled with authentic theatre costumes. Put on a skit using sound effects and props available on a real stage.
Every day at 3pm is Feeding Time at the Staten Island Children's Museum when the museum's bugs, fish, birds and guinea pigs are fed and cared for. Children can even walk with a seeing eye dog, hear like a cat, see like a pigeon, or groom the animal of their choosing. And after a long exciting day, enjoy Story Time with tales and stories from around the globe.
To get to the Staten Island Children's Museum, take the Staten Island Ferry, hop on the S40 bus at the ferry terminal to the Snug Harbor Road stop. If arriving by car: From Staten Island Expressway (Rte 278) take Exit 13 to Clove Rd. intersection and turn North on Clove Rd.
