Founded in 1977, the New Museum of Contemporary Art is the only museum in New York City devoted solely to presenting modern art from around the world. With exhibits of artists from Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Cuba, Germany, Poland, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, among many others, the Museum is a fresh experience for art lovers in search of the masterpieces of under-recognized global artists.
Visitors to the New Museum will find no permanent displays, but rather the museum features 3 to 4 major exhibitions a year along with a dozen or so smaller exhibitions. Having previously hosted the works of important figures such as Ana Mendieta, William Kentridge, David Wojnarowicz, Paul McCarthy, and Andrea Zittel before they received widespread public recognition, the Museum is also a showcase artistic commentary on current events, displaying controversial and provocative works on subjects of cultural and racial diversity. Visitors can enjoy free, 45 minute, docent-led tours of the Museum's exhibitions with the purchase of admission tickets, as well as access to museum programs and performances.
When all the artistic stimulation has revved up your appetite, head for the New Food café, for fresh green salads, savory soups and exotic desserts, such as artisanal chocolate bars and cheesy New Puffs. Best of all, when you lunch at the Café you're supporting the environment since they serve up meals in reusable bags that can be converted to a stylish tote.
To get to the New Museum by Subway, take the number 6 to Spring Street or N/R to Prince Street. If traveling by bus, take the M103 to Prince and Bowery or M6 to Broadway and Prince. The museum is located at 235 Bowery.
