Our Museum Expert Says:

A diamond in the rough, the Museum of the City of New York reflects the diversity and culture of the City itself. From its incredible theater collection to the extensive collection of photos and prints, this museum will draw you in in a New York minute!

The Museum of the City of New York is both an art gallery and a history museum. Recognized in 1982 for "outstanding contributions to the City of New York," the Museum is housed in a brick and limestone building designed by Joseph J. Freedlander in the neo-Georgian style. Collections include paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs featuring New York City and its residents. There are also costumes, decorative objects and furniture, toys, rare books and manuscripts, marine and military collections and police and fire collections with a New York connection. The museum's "Broadway," exhibit is brimming with costumes, set designs, posters, paintings, and programs. The kids will get a kick out of "New York Toy Stories," which features more than 300 toys, dolls and teddy bears, dating from 1785 to the present. Other unique items include fire-fighting equipment, ship's figure heads, a 19th-century police paddy wagon, and Yankee Stadium seats. The museum also sponsors weekend concerts, performances, and workshops appropriate for families.

Getting here is easy. By bus, take the M1, M3, M4 or M106 to 104th Street or the M2 to 101st Street. Alternatively, take the subway #6 Lexington Avenue train to 103rd Street, walk three blocks west, or take the #2 or #3 train to Central Park North (110th Street), walk one block east to Fifth Avenue, then south to 103rd Street. So hop a bus or a train and immerse yourself in the City of New York.
