Unfortunately, this museum no longer exists. In 2002, the collection of historic and modern art and culture from Africa moved out of SoHo to other temporary locations in Manhattan. Currently, the collection is not housed in a public space. If you are looking for the Museum of African American History in New York City or a Black History Museum in NYC, look elsewhere. The Museum of African American History in Boston and in Nantucket, MA preserves the history of African Americans in New England. The AAMP in Philadelphia has been featuring the heritage, culture and legacy of African Americans since 1976. Finally, the Smithsonian is expected to open the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC in 2015.
While none of that helps people interested in Black history in Manhattan, the city does offer some significant points of interest in the African American experience in New York City. Visit the African Burial Ground, downtown. Visit the Museum for African Art in Soho, which offers exhibitions relating to the African Diaspora, as well as art of Africa. If you are looking more towards research, spend some time at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. The center features arts and artifacts and is part of the New York Public Library system.
Anyway, Boston, Philadelphia and even Detroit have serious museums dedicated to the history of Blacks in America – so write the Mayor, write your Senator of Representative to fix this omission.
