Explore the rich and varied African culture in this single independent institution dedicated to the understanding and appreciation of African art. For over 20 years, the Museum of African Art, located in Long Island, has offered visitors a chance to intertwine their culture with that of the vast continent halfway around the world.
On display at the Museum of African Art, you can see the paintings of Sudan's visionary modernist, Ibrahim El Salahi who combines his Muslim faith and perspectives with the Western world. Admire the works of El Anatsui, one of Africa's most acclaimed sculptors and considered one of the most sought after contemporary artists. Anatsui's display entitled "The Last Time I Wrote to you About Africa" presents his first comprehensive retrospective on Africa.
The Museum for African Art features a unique basket collection from Africa and the American South. Visitors will be amazed at the similarities in style and design of diametrically opposed cultures. There is also a fascinating sculpture exhibit on the religious dynasty and divinity of the Nigerian people.

The museum's store holds special publications available only from the museum as well as special novels and books with famous African artists' collections such as "20th Century African Art", "African Faces, African Figures", and "Art That Heals: The Image as Medicine in Ethiopia".
To get to the museum take the 7 train to 33rd St. station, head north one block to 43rd Ave. then make a right and walk for three blocks to 36th St.
