Madame Tussaud learned her skills from her mother's employer Philippe Curtius, a doctor with a talent for wax modeling. Not long after, the first Madame Tussaud's was opened in London in 1835. Upon entering the New York museum, visitors emerge from the elevator and come out into a fabulous party room, where it's often difficult to tell whether the guests are "real" or wax. As you wander the museum, you'll come face to face with new and old political, historical, and celebrity figures.
