Our Museum Expert Says:

Since 1974, the International Centre of Photography has been dedicated to teaching and encouraging critical thinking and visual literacy to its visitors. Loaded with over 100,000 photographs in its permanent collection and temporary exhibits changing quarterly, the museum is truly a masterpiece and a tribute to photography today and through the ages.

The Centre's permanent collection houses important images both historical and contemporary. The ICP collection showcases an entire history of photography, from daguerreotypes to gelatin silver and digital chromogenic prints.

Strongest in its holdings from the 1930s to the 1990s, are large bodies of work by artists such as W. Eugene Smith, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Farm Security Administration photographers, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Lisette Model, Gordon Parks, James VanDerZee, and Garry Winogrand. Contemporary artists' work such as Carrie Mae Weems, Justine Kurland, Katy Grannan, Vik Muniz, Tomoko Sawada, and Susan Meiselas are also on display for your viewing pleasure.

Not to be missed is a vast display of magazine photos published between World War I and II. Magazines such as Vu, Regards, Picture Post, Lilliput, Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung, and LIFE are a part of this magnificent collection.

A permanent exhibit featuring Robert Capa is truly exceptional, with vintage prints, contact sheets, caption sheets, handwritten observations, personal letters and original magazine layouts, where the stories are really brought to life, giving us an insider's look at how one of the world's greatest photographers worked.

The International Centre of Photography has special group options including Polaroid Workshops, Writing Workshops, and Family Programs designed to bring children and adults together through the world of photography. They can also bring the museum to you with the Centre's Virtual Tour program.

The Centre's permanent collection is open to researchers and students Monday through Friday by appointment only.

The Catherine K. Café, located on the lower floor of the Museum gallery, offers light fare and drinks for your enjoyment.
